Pre-departure checklist

As exciting as relocating overseas sounds, there is an incredible amount of administrative work to be done prior to the departure. So I’m making a list of to-do as a reminder to myself and, hopefully, may come in useful for others.

  • Banks: Ask about payment facilities abroad and inform credit card companies that you’re relocating so they won’t block your account unnecessarily. Depending on your preference, you may want to keep only cards which let you earn frequent flyer miles easily. Also ensure e-commerce accounts, for e.g. PayPal are in order for inter-bank transfers across international orders.
  • Mobile: Ask for a downgrade in monthly subscription plan, or suspension of line. If neither options are available, see which value-added services (caller-ID) can be terminated. Or ask if it’s possible to schedule the cancellation of services (e.g. BIS) once the contract is up.
  • Insurance: Switch monthly premiums to quarterly/yearly payment modes to reduce the hassle of making payments monthly. Also check that the relevant policies support international services, for e.g. emergency hospitalization.
  • Government: Register at Ministry of Foreign Affairs, notify Immigration & Checkpoints Authority and apply for an exit permit from the Ministry of Defence (applicable only for NSmen). Also inform the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore. You still have to file income tax even if you are not earning an income in Singapore.
  • Others: Apply for suspension of other subscription-based services, e.g. gym membership.
  • Phoning home: Set up modes of communication with family and closed ones at home, e.g. Skype, WhatsApp.
  • Documentation: Leave a complete copy of passport, credit cards, insurance, employment details, financial accounts and critical log-in data, as well as relevant contact information at home.
