Hongdae (Hongik University): art, fashion, youngsters

The area around Hongik University, also known as Hongdae (홍대), is the centre of Seoul’s art and fashion scene. From quirky accessories to the latest fashion, shops and outlets of various sizes dot the main and side streets around Hongik. When you’re tired, rest your feet at one of the many alfresco cafes. Some popular with young adults, while others provide a cosy, homely feel.

The Art Free Market, a flea market run by students, is home to an assortment of crafts and accessories made by the students themselves. Here, the crowd watches as a foreigner gets his portrait sketched for free. A must-visit if you’re looking to buy small ornaments or gifts.

Frisbee, an Apple Premium Reseller along the main street Hongsik-ro.

Where there is a queue, it must be sought-after. At ₩1,000, no surprise there was a snaking line for this.

How to get there: Take metro Line 2 to Hongik University station. Take Exit 9. Go in the late afternoon for the shopping, although the place really comes alive in the evening.
